Why am I always the last to know about these trends?
I guess men wear makeup now. Lots of men. In fact, when I first started dating again, it was something I immediately noticed. My boyfriends wore makeup.
To be fair, I do kind of like my men to be a bit girly. Yeah, I said it. You’ll find hundreds of personal ads out there that say “Straight-acting only, no femmes.” Well, fuck that. I like my men with a bit of swish to them. But I digress…
At first I didn’t think anything of the trend, but then I started analyzing it. If all these young, pretty 20-something boys were wearing makeup, maybe I needed to also. I don’t want to be the only guy left with a shiny forehead and gaping pores.
So I started with the obvious consultant… my Mom. She has been an Avon sales representative for over 3 decades now, and knows everything there is about being young and beautiful. Her first reaction was just what you’d expect from any Mom whose son wanted to wear makeup. But once she got past her judgmental fit, she agreed to help me out.
We decided to start with a line called MagiX. It’s a very light foundation/powder combination that is supposed to do the job without looking like you’re wearing anything. Sounds good to me. I obviously want it to look natural.
The first is a clear cream that is supposed to prevent shine for up to 10 hours. I had my doubts… 10 hours? I was blessed cursed with very oily skin. So 10 hours without shine would be a miracle in itself. By the end of the day, I look all shiny and flushed, like I just got done fucking someone. I call it my “sex glow.”
MagiX Face Perfector
This clear cream is called MagiX Face Perfector. Hmmm… Well, it didn’t look like my face was magically airbrushed, as the reviews had suggested. I don’t know what kind of trolls are writing this stuff, but it was not a life changing experience.
However, I will admit, the stuff did a decent job. My face did seem smoother, less shiny, and more “put together” after 4 or 5 hours of wear. It didn’t last 10 hours, but it was still good. I’d recommend it.
MagiX Tinted Face Perfector
Again, I don’t know what trolls are buying this stuff and claiming it’s the ultimate in makeup. It’s only tinted, which in theory makes it look more natural since it doesn’t cover the face as much as it just “blurs” it. Sounds good on paper and God knows women talk about it like they’ve never experienced makeup before.
I personally had a really bad experience. It was not smooth at all and looked completely artificial. I suppose a woman could have pulled it off, but I think all makeup should look like it isn’t there.
I’ve tried it several times, and have to wash it off each time. Damn… This was the one I really wanted to work out.
Too much…
I give up. This makeup stuff is too complicated. I guess I’ll just continue dating men who wear makeup, and they can look beautiful and fresh faced. I’ll just endure with my regular old skin.
I was a bit disappointed because my Mom wears Avon and always looks great. I’m inclined to think the problem is me, or I’m not doing something correctly. But I really don’t feel like trying any other makeup products.
Just for the sake of asking… Do any of you readers use makeup? If so, what products?
Find a boy to apply it for you each day, would make life much easier. And, no, not since college when I had to use coverup on a hickey or two.
OMG!! The boys here in Spain wear make-up. It’s hot, ha ha! It’s the straighties and the gays both!! Ha ha! Generally, I just see guys that have eye liner on, and with their darker features and dark hair it looks so good, really!
Grego
LOL … well i am a makeup artist… it seems that you are using too much of it … even tho it is tinted… try this… take a face lotion, and put it on then apply your tint, use a brush… it works much better…
i tend to wear facepowder… i love the bare minerals… because it is so light, it feeds the skin, and it is easy to use… try JANE, or something from your local grocery store… you will use a brush for this and after dusting you will see that the “blur” is natural, not over done… they also have a bronzer that is great for club wear… but one can over do it with that.
i am opposite of you … i like manly men, and normally only touch up if i am working a JOB/ Shoot… other than that i am a jeans and t-shirt DIVA!! lol
hugs
“I was blessed cursed with very oily skin. ”
Actually you were blessed. Oily skin is young skin. It wrinkles less and more slowly. As for the shine, just a quick splash of water at lunch and dinner and you should be good to go.
I don’t mind a little make-up on my men, depending on the circumstances. I wear guyliner every now and then. I like to imagine it makes me look threatening or, at the least, more Johnny Depp from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I just buy the cheapo pencil eye liner from the local RiteAid.
And fingernail polish, too, again depending on context. No brand loyalty, just whatever color strikes me. I mostly wear this and the eyeliner when I’m doing some of my spiritual practices and rituals; it helps create a mood that’s beyond the mundane and blurs those gender lines and roles, which I think are illusions anyway.
Hey, tell your mom to start marketing her Avon that way! Ha!
See! I told you I’m behind on the times!
haha
Well this is so interesting. I need to start consulting you all for more makeup tips.
Hey the mineral idea sounds like something I should try. My Mom uses mineral makeup and swears by it.
Also, I have not been using lotion before I put the makeup. Maybe that was the problem.
WTF? Guys wearing makeup? That’s so wrong. If someone is going to like you, it better be for who you’re. Why do we always try to make everything so artificial?
I’m not really a makeup-girl. But when I work I usually wear a light eyeliner and on occasion a foundation.
So I’m not really in to it, but I think L’Oreal’s mineral foundation is really good and easy to use, and not so expensive.
Wearing make-up is fun, but it can be a hit and miss proposition in the beginning. I agree with what dudediva said. The most common problem is applying too much, but instead of using a brush, I prefer to use sponge applicators. Also, it takes a while to actually find which color suits you best. Sometimes, you even have to blend foundations yourself.
By the way, I use M.A.C Oil Control Lotion and the Studio Tech Foundation.
Hey Nathan, I’m a licensed manicurist, and have been wearing nail polish (all colors) for at least 10 years. I also started experimenting with makeup (mostly eyeliner & eye shadow) a couple of years ago. Now, I’ve gotten so used to it, I can’t imagine going out without the stuff.
Keep trying, and soon you’ll find you simply don’t like the way you look without the makeup. Best of luck.
