Tonight, Ellen will be taping her interview live with Republican candidate John McCain. The segment will appear on tomorrow’s show. Bloggers have been speculating that Ellen will press him for answers on why he doesn’t support gay marriage.
Historically, Ellen has not been a confrontational person. She is more likely to cry than to get angry, it’s just part of her loving nature. But she’s been increasingly outspoken about gay rights this season, and recently announced her engagement to partner Portia de Rossi.
I am very curious to see how this one plays out. I truly don’t think it will get ugly. But I am hoping that Ellen stands her ground and makes him look like a fool. I would especially love it if she asked him point blank “Why do you believe I am a second class American?”
She asked both Clinton and Obama about gay rights when they were on the show, so there’s no doubt the topic will be brought up with McCain. The question is how far will she take it?
Ellen has a lot of leverage right now. She is voted the most liked daytime host, even above Oprah, and the public views her very positively. I think that if she decided to get shitty one time on the air, people would be okay with it.
Take a risk, Ellen!
Yeah, I do wish Ellen would get a little more confrontational sometimes, but I guess she doesn’t want to come off as the pushy lesbian, a la Rosie O’Donnell.
So did you see today’s show? Had to work, of course and didn’t get around to taping it. I wonder how it went.
Speaking of John McCain, I had to scold my partner the other day when he actually said he might vote for McCain!
