The fact that I’m gay is often not the center of attention on my blog, but instead background noise. I’m not defined by my sexuality and don’t feel the need to discuss it daily. There comes a point in life when you become comfortable with yourself and realize who you truly are, not what a label says you are.
But I do my best little by little to make change. I openly discuss my partner Rodney, I openly advertise my business in newspapers for the gay & lesbian community, and when I overhear something that I deem to be homophobic, I speak up and say that it’s unacceptable. I refuse to hide in a symbolic closet and live as a second class citizen when I know that I’m just as equally as important as heterosexual citizens.
These actions may be small in themselves, but as a whole, they can change the path of the future. It’s so important that we all speak up and defend ourselves in any way we can.
This touching and heartbreaking clip from Ellen Degeneres’ show demonstrates how society’s message that being gay is “wrong” ultimately influenced an 8th grader to murder a fellow student simply for being gay.
Where, oh where, did we get the idea that gay people should be murdered? Was it in church? Perhaps. Was it in the home? Very likely. Was it on TV? You bet. It’s everywhere. Homophobia is not acceptable.
Here’s the clip, which will be on Friday’s show:
