I know the Kanye West/MTV controversy is old news, but I caught an interview of him today that I felt the need to chime in on. It was last Friday’s episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show. Sometimes I get behind, but I catch up on Tivo. Anyway, he was explaining why he was upset with MTV.
Kanye gets a lot of criticism for his attitude and cockiness. I can see why it would annoy people. In fact, Rodney is passionately against anything Kanye does specifically because he doesn’t like Kanye’s attitude.
But I’m actually proud to admit that I have a lot of Kanye’s music that I’ve purchased through iTunes. He’s very creative and talented. His persona does not change the fact that it’s good music.
Although his tantrum at MTV does indeed come off as childish, I have to step back and see it for what it really is. Kanye was upset, and most people do get upset when they lose. But as adults, we are pressured to keep it inside and just wear a smile.
I’m sure there are hundreds of celebrities each year that wear a smile on camera, then go home and throw the biggest tantrum you could imagine. Kanye just chooses to express himself freely and openly.
While this can also be destructive behavior if it goes too far, it does remind me of my post last week, when I said people try too hard to suppress their emotions.
Love it or hate it, Kanye is more real and honest than most celebrities. I say “cheers” to that.
