If you’re a fan of Kathy Griffin, you’re probably familiar with the imitations she does of her Irish Catholic Mother, who says “Oh, Kathleen” whenever she’s being vulgar.
Well Kathy was in Nashville this weekend and Rodney and I had orchestra seats to see her. We saw her last year too.
The thing you have to know about Kathy is that she is extremely hard working with her performances. Most comedians tell the same jokes at each show, which is boring if you happen to see them twice.
Kathy, on the other hand, writes new material weekly based on what’s going on in the news. With that being said, there is probably a tremendous amount of pressure and if it isn’t an interesting news week, she has less to go on.
While she was very funny, a lot of her raw edge seemed to be missing this year. Maybe it was just an off-night, but her material did seem to be a bit toned down.
She was a guest on Ellen Degeneres’ talk show 2 weeks ago and Ellen told her she shouldn’t be so mean to people. She explained that Kathy is very smart and very gifted, and she should use her talents to write comedy that doesn’t make other people feel bad.
It’s hard to say whether or not Kathy took her advice, but I was extremely surprised that Kathy didn’t lash out about Ellen in her show. Kathy has always mentioned Ellen in previous performances. I also noticed that Kathy tip toed around “The View” topics, where she used to completely tear into the hosts.
So is this a new side of Kathy? At some point, she might find it more and more difficult to bash celebrities as she becomes more popular.
Time will tell. But for now, I’m glad Kathy continues to stop here in the South! It was a sold out event, and it’s clear that Nashville loves Kathy.
Today I had Comcast’s phone service installed. It’s $24.95 a month, and I’ve had it before, so I thought I’d give it a whirl again. I’ve went a year using only my cell phone, with no land line.
Whenever a straight man is coming over, specifically a Comcast one, I have to make sure and clear out everything in their path. I don’t know what it is, but they just seem to be big husky men who fall over everything.
So this afternoon I was greeted by 2 Southern gentlemen from Comcast. They were cute and nice as could be. They even called me “sir” which I love it when straight men call me that. There’s something hot about it.
Anyway, I led them upstairs to my office (where the modem is) and they almost fell down the stairs. Then they came in the room and just swung into action, plopping stuff on my desk, sitting in my chair, running cords all over the place. It was a good thing I took everything off my desk and even moved the trashcan in advance.
They were wowed by my MacBook Pro and incredibly small Airport. Then they started getting excited by my computer’s features. “Whoa, that’s sooo cool!”. It’s called OS X boys.
When they left, their big footsteps on the stairs shook the whole house. My office smelled “straight-manny”. Kinda stinky, but kinda sexy, you know. Like big sweaty men who’d been in the sun all day.
It was fun having them in the house. They were very cute and charming, and they liked my computer. But I was relieved to be able to put my stuff back in order again.
Last year we played a “Fill in the blank” game on my blog where I posted one line and each commenter filled in the next, creating a really off the wall story. It was hilarious! (Cream corn, anyone?)
So this year, I’m starting another one. The theme is gossip column. All you have to do is write the next line, or lines. Heck, write as much as you want.
Today I saw Nathan…
While working today, I had a random flashback to high school, sitting in class next to this girl who was always mean to me. I don’t recall her name, but she had very elf like features. She would always call me a fag, and she did it in such an odd way. She’s just come in and sit down next to me and say something off the wall.
The weird thing was that she’d try to have conversations with me. For example, she’d tell me about her weekend, and then ask which boy I had butt sex with, all in a very matter-of-fact way. She was so cruel, and said things in such a nonchalant way, like she didn’t care that she was hurting me.
One day, I just looked at her and said “Why are you so mean to me?”. Can’t you just hear the little boy innocence in that question? She simply replied “Why do you act like such a faggott?”
I didn’t know I was acting any way. It’s hard for a young boy to understand that the way he speaks or acts is “fag-ish” when he isn’t even trying.
Oh well… The good news is that I’d never let anybody talk to me that way today.
My blog is now once again open to comments from unregistered users.
Over a year ago, I changed the administrative settings so people would be required to register a username and password with a valid e-mail address before they could comment.
As a result, I have had absolutely zero spam because no spammer is going to register with a real e-mail address. Needless to say, it’s been heavenly.
But I’ve decided to give this a shot again and see how it goes. To be honest, curiosity is what is motivating me to try this. Every day, people come to my blog, and I have no idea who they are. I thought maybe this would warm them up to giving me a shout.
Somebody call Webster’s, I have a new word for you: hanghair.
What is a hanghair? A hanghair is when the hair around your nipple is starting to grow back, and isn’t long enough to drape itself over the nipple, but is short enough to get caught in the fibers of your shirt. The result is a painful tug when your shirt moves, which then in turn pulls on the hanghair.
There you have it. Ouch.
I have a tendency to call TV shows “the best show ever”. Rodney has pointed it out and so every show I like is the best, which of course discredits me.
My newest “best show ever” is Noah’s Arc. We don’t have the Logo network, so I’ve been watching the DVD’s now. This series in particular divided its viewers. People who liked it were absolutely hooked. I fall into that category. I loved the characters, the plot, and the general silliness of it. People who didn’t like it complained because they felt the characters were too effeminate, or the plotline was too unbelievable. I’ve always been quick to ignore this type of criticism, because some of my favorite sitcomes in the 80’s were unbelievable. That’s why I liked them. Fiction can be fun.
But Season 2 is drastically better, just as reviews have said. I am so sad to know there won’t be a Season 3.
Anyway, some of my other “best shows ever” include: Six Feet Under, The Golden Girls, Sex and the City, Dexter, The L Word, Queer As Folk, The Family Guy, and of course Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
The new fall line-up is starting, so we’ll what new shows earn my superficial “best show ever” label. Kid Nation anyone?.
Sidenote: Did anyone know it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day? Arrr…
I know the Kanye West/MTV controversy is old news, but I caught an interview of him today that I felt the need to chime in on. It was last Friday’s episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show. Sometimes I get behind, but I catch up on Tivo. Anyway, he was explaining why he was upset with MTV.
Kanye gets a lot of criticism for his attitude and cockiness. I can see why it would annoy people. In fact, Rodney is passionately against anything Kanye does specifically because he doesn’t like Kanye’s attitude.
But I’m actually proud to admit that I have a lot of Kanye’s music that I’ve purchased through iTunes. He’s very creative and talented. His persona does not change the fact that it’s good music.
Although his tantrum at MTV does indeed come off as childish, I have to step back and see it for what it really is. Kanye was upset, and most people do get upset when they lose. But as adults, we are pressured to keep it inside and just wear a smile.
I’m sure there are hundreds of celebrities each year that wear a smile on camera, then go home and throw the biggest tantrum you could imagine. Kanye just chooses to express himself freely and openly.
While this can also be destructive behavior if it goes too far, it does remind me of my post last week, when I said people try too hard to suppress their emotions.
Love it or hate it, Kanye is more real and honest than most celebrities. I say “cheers” to that.
Have you ever been holding onto something dark and painful in your heart, but not even realized it until you read something so deep that it brought everything to surface?
I was carrying weight, and I didn’t even know it until I read this post on Lewis’ blog.
An excerpt reads:
“I’ve got a couple of things whose time has expired deep in the crevasses of my heart. I don’t have room for them any longer. And a bad thought or two in my mind that need to make their way to death. This is the season of change. Of watching, and allowing, things to die….even encouraging them to. So, I’m digging a hole. Six feet deep. And putting a few things in there. Tossing dirt on top and tamping it down. I don’t even think I’ll place flowers on the top.”
Something about that resonated with me. Maybe we all have a little baggage that needs to be dropped off in a barren place… never to be found again.
I’ve noticed over time that my headlines seem to change patterns. Sometimes they are in all lowercase letters, and other times they use Capitals to emphasize words. A quick look at my RSS feeds showed that no other blogger does this for their headlines. They use the same pattern for all their post titles, consistently.
So why am I different? What does it mean?
Posts with lowercase titles:
When I use all lowercase, I think I am subconsciously being vulnerable and open to my readers. I am more casual in my approach, and everything is written from a personal point of view. Occasionally, I also put a period at the end of the headline. I’m not quite sure when it means, but I have noticed it more often in posts that are emotional or difficult for me to express.
Posts with Uppercase Titles:
These posts are often impersonal. I use them to discuss something that’s happening in the news, to report something on TV, or sometimes to write fictional posts. For example, sometimes I make up cheeky news reports, which are obviously fake, and they almost always use this pattern for their headlines.
One last observation:
Posts that use Capitals in the headline receive by-far more comments than posts that are in all lowercase. Is it because the writing style is different (and/or better) or is it because the Capitals get readers’ attention when they show up in RSS feeds?
Those are my thoughts for the day.
