It’s funny how having a blog helps you recognize the changes that go on in your life over a period of years.
Just last year, my blog had a feature on the comments that said, for example, “10 Bitches Have Left Comments.” At the time, it made perfect sense, though. A lot of my online friends called each other that word. It was all in humor, and nobody took it literally.
Now, it sounds like an awful thing to call people. It doesn’t fit the particular group of people who read my blog, and it no longer fits me either.
In addition, my blog’s tagline has always been “The naked truth about my gay life.” I started out telling my story on my blog. I explained all the homophobia and abuse I had experienced from my peers while growing up as a gay boy in a small town.
But now I’m a gay man, and I don’t tolerate homophobia. It’s almost irrelevant to call this “the naked truth about my gay life” because I have no new stories to tell on that subject. I have surrounded myself with such a strong support group of friends, and I rarely feel that my sexuality is a topic of importance. I feel like they all protect me, and nobody is going to let me be a victim of homophobia. I am not a victim.
This is not my gay life… it’s just MY LIFE. The habits change, the choice of words change. But it’s all part of the pieces that make me.
If you have a blog, you should pick a really old entry and re-visit it. Sometimes the contrast is jarring.
