Nathan Exposed: the naked truth about my gay life

I’ve never watched Grey’s Anatomy, but I am aware of the behind-the-scenes fighting that inspired actor T.R. Knight to come out as a gay man.

When I heard about it, I felt so nonchalant, almost like saying “Okay, so what’s your point?” I think it’s good that we are finally becoming so familiar with people being openly gay that we don’t even care when they announce it. That’s the way it should be.

But this interview on The Ellen Degeneres Show reminded me that just 10 years ago, this was a very big deal. Before April, 1997, I didn’t have any really strong role models for gay people on television. I was 15 at the time and I was going through some confusion with my sexuality. Ellen’s coming out really helped me feel like I wasn’t alone.

So seeing T.R. discuss the word “faggot” with Ellen brought to surface the realization at how far we have come in 10 years. His sincerity really touched me and he was so grateful to Ellen for helping pave the path. I agree. Ellen is such an inspiration to me. Now that I’m completely out (with family, with friends, with co-workers) it’s easy to forget that there are still many people who struggle with facing the truth. So I hope this segment inspires in some way:

Yes, and as the old commercial said, “We’ve come along way baby”, but unfortunately we still have far to go.

I thought this was a great interview, and I want to know what Dr. McDumbass would say if someone called him a slur equal to me as faggot. I know you almost get castrated if you call an African-American the “N” word.

I wonder what he has to say now, that even tho he said “It absolutely didn’t happen, I did not call T.R. a faggot”, since T.R. was on Ellen, hmmmmmmmm. Can’t wait for this one.

I caught this one too. It was a great interview. I think TR is a cutie, all nervous and all. You are right about 10 yrs ago. Ellen really did lay the groundwork for gays in Hollywood to come out and be accepted. Whats this about you not watching Grey’s?? It’s a great show. Good post.

I still think that in an ideal world we shouldn’t have to “announce” it nor hide it; people should just be aware of it.
