Nathan Exposed: the naked truth about my gay life

So far, I’ve covered my pet peeves: definitely, lose, and your/you’re.

Today’s words are “accept” and “except”. It’s easy to get these two confused when you are trying to use them in a sentence, but you know I’m going to find a way to make it easy for you. I’m just a nice guy like that.

“Accept” is an instance of receiving or agreeing with something. You can “accept” a gift or “accept” that your opinions are different.

“Except” is the subtraction or exclusion of something. You can like everything about a neighborhood, “except” for the people who live behind you.

Most of the time, people really do mean to say “except” but use “accept” instead. So keep that in mind.

Never use “accept”, “except” when you are receiving or agreeing with something. ;)

Well now. You know that honestly this is something I have been finding both a slightly helpfull (because I spell for shit!) and usually funny while being educational.

Were you an English teacher in a previous life? ;)

Can I suggest another, this time a 3-way… There, Their, They’re. Gosh that annoys me when people get that wrong, particularly on documents at work…

Here’s another that I’ve even seen you guilty of! “I hate Monday’s” notice the apostrophe. It should read “I hate Mondays” - no apostrophe. Apostrophe is usually a possesive modifier. Like “I hate Monday’s weather”. The only exception is its use in the word “Its” and “It’s” which still confuses me to this day. I never know if I’ve used it right.

Michael - I’m glad I make it fun for you! That’s how it’s supposed to be.

Tom - You got it! Next week will be a triple feature. :)

Kory - *gasp* You’re right Kory! Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Nathan, you’re grammar posts are definately helpful! In fact, their so interesting that I’m not going to read any more blogs accept your’s!

(Until you revoke my comment-posting privileges, that is.)

Now, I will use my impeccable English to point out that it is currently Thursday, National Underwear Day. According to my philosophy, everyone is entitled to participate. So where is your N.U.D. photo for the pleasure of your readers? ;-)

(I know, I know - where is mine? I’d certainly post one, if I had any underwear!)

Finally! Someone who’s as tired of the butchering of the English language as I am. “There, They’re, Their…You’re, Your…oh the list goes on and on.” And cheers for pointing all this out with such panache!
