I make it a rule to not blog about my work for privacy reasons.
But this specific event was not work-related, even though it happened here. It is too awesome and I must share it with my fellow bloggers.
One of the women here has a husband who is running for Congress. I have mixed feelings about writing her name, so I’m just going to call her “K” for now. This is what happened:
K: “Hi Nathan, I have a favor to ask you. What’s your extension? I couldn’t call you so I e-mailed you”
Me: “Oh, I hadn’t seen that. My extension is ///”
K: “Well my husband is running for Congress and I wanted to know how much you would charge to do a design for his campaign”
Me: “Your husband is a Republican, right?”
K: “Yes”
Me: “Does your husband support gay marriage?”
K: “No”
Me: “Then no, I’m not going to do that. I don’t support people who don’t support my rights”
K: “Well I just thought you’d like some extra money”
Me: “No, my rights are not for sale.”
K was visibly shocked and tried to smile her way through her broken confidence.
K: “Oh ok… well um I don’t have your extension…what is it?” (she asked again because she didn’t know what to say)
Me: “It is ///”
K: “Ok, well um..thank you”
And she stumbled out the door.
SCORE!
What was she thinking? She already knew I am gay, and she already knew I consider Rodney my husband. I cannot believe she was naive enough to think she could pay me to fuck my own rights. Have you ever heard “with liberty and justice for ALL”?
That line does not have a little asterisk beside it with a footnote that says “Does not apply if you are gay. Some restrictions may apply. Void where prohibited.”
Being an American is not supposed to be a variable right. Our laws are supposed to apply to every man and woman here. You can’t pick and choose who gets what rights.
Anyway, this whole episode was priceless! The guys in my office loved it. They said I had “flawless delivery and didn’t miss a beat”. I am feeling so good right now. And I hope “K” really thinks about how careless she has been.
