Lift Your Leg and Say “Hey, Gurl!”
Let me set this up for you. Petey is the miniature schnauzer that I had with my ex, Rodney. After the break-up, Rodney and I both agreed that Petey would go live with him.
Petey never hiked his leg when he went to pee. I don’t know if it’s a learned behavior or not. He was never around other dogs and we didn’t have any trees. I don’t know if that matters. Anyway, he just squatted in the yard to pee. He’s 4 years old.
But…
A few days ago, Rodney called to tell me Petey lifted his leg to pee on a tree. He walked right up to it, gave it a good squirt, and was done. He hasn’t done it again.
I would just like to know the insight into this. Did Petey plot the whole scene in his head? Did he practice the big event days in advance? I can just see him thinking about it at night. The right angle, the right presentation, it was all mapped out so he would pee like a pro.
And how did he feel after he did it? Was he proud, triumphant, embarrassed? Clearly he didn’t like it since he hasn’t done it since.
I really wish I had been there to see Petey’s first pee on a tree. He’s always been such a homo. I can just imagine him lifting one leg and saying, “Hey, Gurl! Look at my thighs, I’ve been working out.”
Holla.

Pavlov would rarely lift his leg either squatting to pee or just standing still. Someone told me that if you neuter them early they really don’t ever get into the habit of lifting their legs.
After probably a year of taking a leak like a stallion, Mason finally lifted his leg one day on a tree…I WAS SHOCKED. He now does it regularly. But every once in a while, he shocks me with some other behavior that I’ve never seen before –
Maybe he just wanted a little more fresh air down there!
Or he just realized he was a Rockette in a former life.
My dog lifted his leg twice at each new home location. Evidently, once he feels secure in his ownership of the property, he squats. I had a friend leave a female for us to watch during their vaction and my dog hiked his leg a few more times by the front gate…evidently to inform her he was the boss. We took in an older male dog from another friend and my dog probably was not threatened by this dog and he continued squatting.
During walks my pooch occasionally hikes and squats. Probably different breeds as well as dog personalities act differently.
My dog is a red Husky that showed up at work one day. He hung around for a couple of days and just about got all of the grease off of the cars and shop floor with his fur and I finally brought him home and cleaned him up. He has been super loyal, social, and friendly. I said I would never get attached to another dog but I will miss Rex when he passes away.
Irisgirl…I am still laughing at that comment…too funny
