Gun Control… But How?
We all know the saying… Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.
Our second amendment gives us the right to bear arms. But when that amendment was put into place, our forefathers probably never envisioned a world where you could kill off a whole group of people with a hand gun.
It’s a sensitive subject for many people. Gun enthusiasts think that all guns should be legal, no matter what. No restrictions, no sidenotes, they see it as their own right, pure and simple.
Other people think that guns should be banned altogether, pointing to the facts and statistics about gun violence and how it continues to increase each year. In their opinion, these laws need to be revised to reflect our modern society.
But many people are somewhere in the middle. They think guns should be allowed for things like hunting, but would like to see an end to these tiny concealed weapons that people carry with them. Afterall, most gun related violence is the result of a small concealed weapon.
One thing I think we can all universally agree on is that there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. How we achieve that is an open ended question.
What do you think the solution is?

I like Chris Rock’s solution — just make bullets really really expensive
I don’t know the what the solution might be, but that 2nd amendment was written a long time ago. I think more restrictions wouldn’t hurt. Gun sales are up, given to the economic crisis, sad, huh?
Training, training, training. Most of the time you apply for a permit and $60 and a month later you have one that’s good for five years. Only a few states require that you actually furnish proof that you know how to use one.
Yes, it’s our right, and no, I’m sure the founding fathers didn’t envision the world of guns we’ve become, but it’s still our reality. I’ve seen so many people apply, buy a gun, and just start carrying it “for protection.” Well how are you going to use a tool for protection if you haven’t practiced using it? Requiring training for all permits through a state mandated range (or even civilian classes held at the police academy), and also thorough background checks, would be a great thing!
I, myself, am a surgeon with my .45.
I think we should be allowed to own guns but they have to be the equivalent of what was available when the second amendment was created. No automatics but bayonets are ok.
Just finished going over the news today, it been awhile and part of my blog roll discussed the current rise in crime in San Francisco, and how our primarily liberal government body wants to blame guns laws on crimes committed instead of focusing on the groups responsible for the crimes.
Around here you can’t point fingers at anyone other than conservatives, whites, and the wealthy so instead of saying, the poor black communities continue to deteriorate under the pressures of our economy sparking criminal activity, and saying our cities lenient policy on illegal aliens has increased gang violence, they instead want to blame gun ownership in general. Somehow believing if gun laws are tightened it will squeeze access to guns within criminal rings… RIGHT.
The right to bear arms should continue to be withheld. Cracking further down on this right will only leave more law abiding citizens unarmed and open to potential intrusions. I’d prefer to live in a city with a more open gun policy, if the community thinks you might have a gun on you, less people are going to try to fuck with you.
There have been times I would have liked to say shut the f’ up to some thug screaming in the back of the bus, but I dont’, and why because they probably got a gun, or a knife on them, and I dont have the health insurance to cover my stab wound.
realness.
I don’t think that anyone except the police, the military and hunters should have guns.
Guns make it to easy to kill people.
But I don’t have a solution.
