Househunt Part 5: The Last One
After an exhausting weekend of touring homes throughout Nashville and its suburbs, Rodney and I finished off our tour with our Realtors in Murfreesboro, a town 30 miles outside of Nashville.
The very last house we toured, which wasn’t even on our agenda, was a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage home on a large lot.
We made an offer, it was accepted, and the ball started rolling. That’s when the big storm came. The storm that spawned 31 tornadoes and killed dozens of people. The storm that caused over $6,000 worth of damage to our upcoming new home.
Fuck.
Well, luckily, we were not set to close until May 5th. So technically, the house was not our responsibility. Our Realtors quickly drew up a contract requesting that all repairs be made before closing, otherwise the deal was off.
But it’s impossible…we were told… Insurance companies are backed up for weeks, and most homeowners won’t be able to have their homes repaired for at least 6-8 weeks.
I demanded for everything to be done, or the deal was off. I was firm, and to the point. I hated to be that way, but it was our money on the line. If we bought the house without the repairs, we’d be stuck.
7 days before closing, the house was still not repaired. 3 days. 2 days.
FINALLY! It was all done.
We closed on the house May 5th. We were SO HAPPY! Rodney and I went out to Olive Garden for lunch. That’s where we had our first date 5 years ago. We ate a delicious meal…and well, I got a little drunk. Oops.
Our family came down to help us move that weekend, and that’s the story of our first house.

What a lovely home! I’m glad the previous owners caved in and got the repairs done! Congrats again!
What are the chances of tornadoes hitting the area again? I’m so spoiled. Have never had to think about scary natural disasters like tornadoes before.
I love this story. Although I’m a bit puzzled as to why you would go to the Olive Garden. Hmm…didn’t they even do a Will and Grace episode about that place. Congratulations on your new home! Hopefully (yet doubtfully) the environment won’t strike again!
Thanks guys! Well luckily it wasn’t a tornado, just hail damage. Chunks of hail that size of baseballs actually.
What’s the story on Olive Garden? I don’t remember that episode. It sounded like you meant it in a negative way, so is there a stigma about eating there? In any case, we’ve always enjoyed the ones in our area.
But speaking of Will and Grace, I’m sad that they are going off the air this week. They were the first gay themed sitcom after Ellen was cancelled, and they have become a really important part of television history.
There was an episode where Will and Grace went to a Chinese restaurant with Bob and wots-her-name … you know, their straight best friends, and Bob and wots-her-name were boring and wouldn’t touch the Chinses food. Instead, they wanted to go to the unadventurous Olive Garden.
See, I’m not even American and I know about the Olive Garden!
Cute house, I hope you two enjoy putting your touch on it. I am happy for you two. When Manny & I first moved into our house, we ordered pizza in and ate off of moving boxes drinking the Champaign from our Sales person.
Thanks Scott
We have a lot of things we want to do. Naturally, as with all neighborhoods, there’s that one guy who has the most immaculate lawn and we want to be that someday. Pizza and champaign sounds good right now. Oops, it’s only 9:30 in the morning.
Sunshine – Sorry, I’m still not with you. So it’s considered boring to eat there? You should have seen the stripper who danced on our table. I didn’t think he was boring at all.
I think there is some inside joke about Olive Garden that I’m not getting. I asked my fellow breeders, and they’ve never heard anything. So is there some sort of anti-Olive Garden thing with the gays?
I think it has something to do with the fact that Olive Garden is a franchise Italian restaurant, and that’s just a contradiction in terms. “Real” Italian restaurants are supposed to be quaint, family-owned establishments where two brothers cooka da pizza pies and sing arias at 9 o’clock. And maybe OG food doesn’t qualify as real Italian, like American pizza? I don’t know. Just throwing ideas out there. I’d like to know the real reason too
Ohhh! I see. Well “real” Italian places make me gassy. Too much garlic, people! Whew!
DejaFuckinVu: After I bought my house, I, too, thought “where can I find some airline quality lasagna to celebrate this wonderful moment?!” And of course, we ended up at Olive Garden.
You should come to ours then. I’ve heard their lasagne is good. I guess it all depends on how well its managed.
I always get the alfredo pizza. Yum!
